Nanoporous (NP) GaN

Using nanoporous technology we can fabricate VCSEL lasers entirely from high quality epitaxially grown GaN without introducing any crystalline defects or lattice mismatch. The sub-wavelength nanopores result in a GaN/air nanocomposite, which has a tunable refractive index facilitating formation of high reflectivity (>99.9%) distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) critical for VCSEL devices.

Historical Challenges Commercializing GaN VCSELs

There is no intrinsic available material in the III-Nitride system to produce wide bandwidth epitaxial mirrors. Many industry leaders attempted to commercialize GaN VCSELs but without success. Our nanoporous technology enables a simple, low-cost, highly scalable process.

Currently the William Norton Professor in Technological Innovation at Yale University and Advisor to Ganvix.  30+ years of experience in semiconductor epitaxy, LEDs, and lasers. Dr Han served as the Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering from 2010-2016, and has founded two Yale-based spin-off companies including Ganvix.
